As the social distancing level 4 continues, the demand for remote work and remote classes is skyrocketing again. Unlike the situation a few months ago, the focus has now shifted from “need-to-use devices/accessories” to “products that can be used properly and purchased immediately . ”
Especially these days, the demand for connecting not only one monitor but also two monitors (three including a Surface or laptop) is increasing. To do this, you had to buy an expensive docking station that costs 200,000 to 300,000 won or more, such as the Surface Dock 2 (related review) introduced a while ago or the Dell USB-C Dock .
Also, since docking stations are difficult to carry around in a bag , USB-C multiport (or multi-hub) type products are preferred. Waycos' "Thinkway CORE D84 Dual HDMI" (hereinafter referred to as Core D84) is a product that reflects this demand by being able to use dual HDMI and D-SUB in a USB-C multiport form factor .
I will briefly summarize what kind of product it is and what features it has through this post.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After opening the product packaging, the moment I saw the appearance of the Core D84, I got the impression, "Wow, they put everything they can put in here..." On the left side, in order, there is a USB-PD power port (=external power port) , SD and MicroSDXC card reader, HDMI 1 & HDMI 2 ports .
On the right side, there are three USB 3.0 ports and one 2.0 port arranged in order , and a USB-C port (PD power input not possible) for connecting devices . At the bottom, there is a D-SUB port and gigabit Ethernet , and at the top, there is a USB-C cable and a 3.5mm earphone/microphone port .
USB-PD power input can be up to 100W , and a USB-PD input of 65W or more is required for stable use . In particular, if you use more than two video outputs, it cannot be used without a power connection .
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It fits very well into the USB-C port of the Surface Laptop 3 and Surface Pro 7, and of course, power input via USB-PD is also possible. (USB-PD adapter must have USB-C single output of 65W or more) In the case of some recently released USB-C docks and USB-C multi-hubs, the length of the USB-C connector is ambiguously short, so the connection is not made or is frequently disconnected , but the Core D84 can be used well without such problems.
Also, due to an issue with the DP MST (Display Port Multi-Stream Transport) chipset of some USB-C docking stations, it is often found that they can only be used as "screen duplication" and not "screen extension". This means that even if you can actually use multiple monitors, you cannot use them independently .
For the Core D84, it is convenient to use as it supports two HDMI outputs and extended mode , and depending on the PC specifications, three monitors can be connected along with the D-SUB port.
